"Your Town" Host Every 3rd Tuesday Executive Director—Christopher Fitz Chris Fitz became the Executive Director at LandWatch Monterey County in June, 2005. Previously, Chris served as the Deputy Director at LandWatch for four years. In that role, he was the primary staff person in charge of membership and fundraising, and also played a significant role in specific land use policy campaigns. Before joining the LandWatch staff, Chris served on the LandWatch Board of Directors for several years. Chris had his first introduction to local land use issues as a grassroots organizer in Marina. He was among the founding members of Marina 2020 Vision, the local group which, with the assistance of LandWatch, sponsored a successful ballot initiative in Marina, establishing Monterey County’s first Urban Growth Boundary. Prior to coming to LandWatch, Chris was the Senior Officer for Development and Strategic Planning at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), a research and training center of the Monterey Institute of International Studies. CNS is dedicated to combating the spread of weapons of mass destruction by training the next generation of nonproliferation specialists and disseminating timely information and analysis. Chris was in charge of all fundraising activities, fiscal oversight, and a principal participant on the strategic planning and senior management team at CNS. During his eight years at CNS, the annual budget grew from $700,000 to more than $6 million, with over 60 full time employees and 75 graduate students in Monterey and branch offices in Washington, DC and Almaty, Kazakhstan. From 1987 through 1992, Chris served as board member and treasurer of the Monterey County Sanctuary (MCS), an organization that served a community of over 3000 Central American refugees in Monterey County. Chris received a BA in International Policy Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in 1987.
